Keynote Speaker: Hernan Moyano

hernanConnor House is pleased to introduce to you our 2014 Bosom Buddies Gala Keynote Speaker, Hernan Moyano. Like many previous Bosom Buddies galas, Connor House has chosen a speaker who is, or has been closely affected by victims or survivors of breast cancer.

Pictured at left is Hernan with his miraculous wife, Sandra Trujillo de Moyano.  Ten days after their wedding, on October 21, 2002, Sandra was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer at the age of 28.

“Live with Fearless Joy,” was a common phrase Sandra announced and displayed in her last months.  As her mother recalls, Sandra taught family and friends many lessons about how to truly live every day to the fullest.  One of her mother’s favorite Sandra phrases was, “Don’t be afraid to be happy.”  Sandra’s spirit, though her body was destined for a demise, did shine bright.

“Nothing ever stopped her from doing what she wanted to do,” says Moyano.  He fondly remembers the trip Sandra pleaded to take in her last days.  She wanted to travel to China, but refused to fly first class, and was determined to travel there instead on a cargo ship.  Yes, not at all what you would expect of a cancer victim nearing her finish line.  This request only solidified Sandra’s conviction to thoroughly live life in the present moment.  She wanted to experience this adventure and she would not let cancer hold her back.

Hernan keeps Sandra’s memory alive with the website he has created for her, Long Live Sandra Trujillo de Moyano, and by promoting our mutual philanthropy, Friends for an Earlier detection for Breast Cancer.  The organization raises money to conduct research to find a more accessible and an earlier test for women.  Connor House Bosom Buddies, along with people like Hernan and Sandra’s friends and family, all believe we can make the difference in thousands of people’s lives. “Sandra has been the most incredible miracle in my life,” says Hernan.  “She will always be with me in my heart. As she will always be in the hearts of every single person who had the glorious opportunity to meet her.”

Check out Friends’ video about Hernan and Sandra:

Connor House is privileged to have the opportunity of hearing Hernan’s beautiful memories of Sandra in person, on March 22nd, 2014.  We’ll see you at the Gala…

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and Circle Up!

In fall of 2007, 20 Connor House members walked the Race for the Cure after a Davidson ’77 alum and Circle Up team member read about Bosom Buddies’ success in the Davidson Journal and contacted the house. Like Connor, Circle Up is a social and support network of friends dedicated to finding a solution for breast cancer. Many Circle Up members have battled or are still battling breast cancer. They came together to “circle up” a group of women who had been affected by the disease. Every year since 2007, members of Connor House have proudly walked alongside the Circle Up team, which is now the largest team in the annual Charlotte Race. Our connection with Circle Up is intended to foster relationships and increase the networks of both groups. This year, over 50 Connor girls walked with Circle Up at Race for the Cure, along with 10 freshmen who came along.  At our event every year, Circle Up sponsors a table and contributes items to our auction. We hope to continue growing in our relationship with the women of Circle Up for years to come.

Frankelfest

In 2011, Connor House partnered with Kappa Sigma fraternity to coordinate the first annual John Frankel Memorial Scholarship Kickball Tournament at Davidson College. A member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, the Student Government Association, club and intramural sports and Leadership Davidson, Frankel died in a car accident in upstate New York on Dec. 31, 2010. John was adored by Connor House and the entire Davidson Community. “At Davidson, John was known for his leadership and his ability to do seemingly everything with an effortless smile and carefree optimism. Despite the hectic pace of Davidson life, there was always time for a late-night milkshake run, philosophical ramblings, or a friend in need.”
The scholarship campaign led by John’s friends and family has already raised over $135,000, which illustrates the tremendous amount of love and support John’s entire extended network has demonstrated thus far. However, their final goal is to make it a restricted scholarship, which requires $250,000. A restricted scholarship would allow the Frankels and James (John’s brother) to chose who they would like to receive the scholarship, through either requirements or interviews.

Connor House Service

Each Connor member has a personal commitment to service, both in and outside of the house. Connor girls participate both in the initiatives designated by the house, and in countless projects both at Davidson and in their lives at home. Every member of Connor is required to participate in 10 hours of Connor- sponsored service, however, over and over again our members prove their commitment to service by going well beyond this requirement.

The experience and knowledge that comes from performing community service and coordinating student-run and organized events of this scale has proven to be a valuable asset for many Jesters. We believe that the presence of service to others through the organization of Connor House is central to our role in fulfilling Davidson College’s mission to “assist students in developing humane instincts and disciplined and creative minds for lives of leadership and service.”
Hands-on service is an important element of being actively involved in the improvement of the greater community. During the 2012-2013 academic year, Connor House members will join with Carolina Breast Friends to create inspirational quote jars for breast cancer patients, and put together chemotherapy kits for women currently undergoing treatment. For more information on how you can join this initiative, please email Meredith Kerr at mekerr@davidson.edu.

Philanthropy

Connor House participates in the philanthropic fundraising efforts of several different organizations.
Jay Chitty: The Jay Chitty Tennis Tournament is an annual event sponsored by Connor House with Kappa Alpha fraternity in honor of James F. Chitty IV ’07, a Davidson student who passed in a plane crash during the winter of his senior year. Jay was the tennis captain, so this tournament features a variety of doubles teams of all levels of experience, and raises money for a scholarship in his name.
Frankelfest: The John Frankel Memorial Scholarship Kickball Tournament is an annual event hosted by Connor House and Kappa Sigma Fraternity in memory of John Frankel. The event–which features kickball, cornhole golf, and a barbeque, among other things–was started in 2011 to establish a scholarship in Frankel’s name. The hard work of John’s family and friends has since raised over $150,000 for the scholarship, and we look forward to continuing to support their efforts.
Bosom Buddies: Bosom Buddies is an annual fundraising campaign and charity gala to raise money for Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test. The event includes a catered dinner, live and silent auction, raffle, and guest speakers, and hosts over 300 students, parents, alumni, sponsors, community members, and friends. Last year Connor House raised over $74,000 for Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test!
